Google Search is Changing the Game

1 minute Read

In early 2014, the way people consumed digital information shifted; mobile use, for the first time, exceeded PC use. Of the approximately three billion people now using the Internet, two billion are smartphone users.

What this means for small business owners is that, even with great content and a professional design, your website won’t get the search ranking it deserves unless you make sure it’s also mobile-friendly.

According to CAN Capital’s most recent Small Business Health Index, 71 percent of small businesses said they do not have websites optimized for mobile devices.

Google’s Search Rankings Now Prefer Mobile

Launched in mid April 2015, Google’s new algorithm change recognizes the new trends in mobile. As the Google Webmaster blog puts it, “we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal… it will affect mobile searching in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact on our search results.”

Even if you have great content, relevant keywords and comprehensive information, your non-mobile-optimized site won’t rank as high in mobile search results. Optimizing your website is no longer a nice, maybe-someday option; it’s absolutely key if you want to get mobile web traffic now (and you do).

What You Need to Do

Your first step is to find out if your site is mobile-optimized or not. Google has provided a relatively easy check for this; you just need your site’s URL.

If you’re not mobile-optimized, get in touch with your website provider and find out what you need to do to update. If you’ve been building your site yourself, put together an update strategy now. Google has put together a cache of mobilization resources that can at least help get you going in the right direction. Dedicate more time yourself, peg a capable employee to take on responsibility or invest in a professional service to keep your website up-to-date.

The good news: smaller websites are generally easier to convert to mobile than those gigantic sites developed by your bigger competitors. Get your website optimized quickly and you can actually outshine your biggest competitors in mobile search results.

Once your site is mobile-optimized, keep attracting traffic with content marketing and smart social media use. Start researching an app as the next step to attracting the mobile crowd…which, as it turns out, is pretty much everybody.
