Having a website is an important, even necessary, part of running a small business in the 21st century. But it’s not much good if people can’t find you.
A key to being found in the wilderness of websites is to maximize your Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Simply put, you should customize your website to make it more likely that it will show up as a result when someone performs a search.
Through a complicated set of algorithms, Google crawls millions of websites and ranks them based on relevancy to your search. The goal is to have your website ranked high so people see it and click on it. Now, SEO is pretty confusing, and some aspects of it can baffle even a seasoned marketer. But don’t be scared! With a few easy steps you can drastically improve your SEO and the likelihood your page shows up in someone’s search results.
When creating your website, you’ll be asked to provide meta descriptions and titles for each page. These short pieces of text not only tell people what your page is about in the search results, but they are also among the first things Google scans for relevancy.
Use SEO words
Not all words are equal. You want your website to feature words and phrases that reflect common search words people use. Some research on Google’s Key Word Scanner can reveal which words are most frequently used each month. By incorporating these into titles, headlines and metadata, your site will appear more relevant and get ranked higher in the search results.
Frequently update content
There are several reasons why you should be constantly updating your website’s content. 1) It helps grow your audience, 2) Google’s algorithm ranks sites based on how active it is, and 3) the more words on your site, the wider a net you cast. Many businesses blog simply because it increases their SEO value by making their site appear more relevant to more searches.
Write alt text for all your pictures and videos
Google is what it is because of its ability to scan and analyze millions of words and rank them for relevancy. It does not, however, do the same for images. Therefore, it’s important to be strategic in how you label images with proper “alt text.” This text is what the search engine looks at when deciding relevancy. Describe the images using strong SEO words.
Connect to social media
There are many reasons to have links to your company’s social media channels on your site. For the present purposes, being active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google+ accounts will play a part in boosting your SEO. You want to make it easy for visitors to find these links on your site and for visitors to repost your content on their social media channels.
